With a zero-pile construction, Discovery Flatweave Rugs are woven in an ultra-fine kilim weave, making them super lightweight and easy to move around. Not to mention, they are surprisingly durable holding up exceptionally in high-traffic areas.

Further, due to small batch dying, no two Discovery Flatweave Rugs are ever exactly alike – the beauty behind all things handmade.

What are flatweave rugs?

What are Flatweave Rugs?

Unlike knotted-pile rugs, flatweave rugs are made from fibers that are woven together with no knots. To illustrate, an artisan will weave the rug’s weft threads continuously back and forth through it’s warp threads. A backing is then created through the flat-weaving process, which often allows for a reversible pattern on both sides of the rug. Alternatively, with knotted-pile rugs the weft threads are separated by rows of knots that are tied around the rug’s vertical warp threads.

Thus, due to their thin no-pile construction, Flatweave rugs are lightweight and easily transportable. Well-known rug styles such as Kilims, Dhurries and Soumaks all fall under the Flatweave umbrella.

Sustainable Rugs Made With Natural Fibers

Discovery Flatweaves look natural because they are quite literally a product of nature. Being that they’re made with wool yarn that’s been colored with 100% vegetable dyes, every part of these flatweave rugs is biodegradable. As synthetic rugs made with plastic based fibers make up the majority of the market today, choosing eco-friendly rugs is one way to minimize our carbon footprint.
